Translator/Interpreter

Interpreting is the process where in spoken or signed language is transferred into another spoken or signed language. A professional interpreter interprets between two languages in such a way that effective communication takes place between the participating language speakers/signers.

Interpreters often work freelance and can be hired to translate at international conferences, in hospitals or even business meetings.

There is one more type of interpreting called liaison interpreting or consecutive interpreting. It is required in situations such as formal speeches when a speaker after conveying his/her message stops for a while and then the interpreter interprets the spoken speech to the audience.

Working Condition

Working environments of interpreters and translators vary. They are required to travel to the site-whether it is in a neighboring town or on the other side of the world-where their services are needed. Interpreters who work over the telephone generally work on call, often in call centers in urban areas, and keep to a standard 5-day, 40-hour workweek. Interpreters for deaf students in schools usually work in a school setting for 9 months out of the year. Because many interpreters and translators freelance, their schedules are often erratic, with extensive periods of no work interspersed with others requiring long, irregular hours. Freelancing, however, offers variety and flexibility, and allows many workers to choose which jobs to accept or decline.
