Indian Forest Service

Indian Forest Service abbreviated as IFoS is known to be an All India Services of the Government of India. Indian Forest Service was constituted in the year 1966 by the Government of India under the All India Services Act, 1951. India is known to be one of the first countries in the world to introduce scientific forest management. Imperial Forest Department was established in 1864 by the British Raj. In the year 1867, the Imperial Forestry Service was organized.

Career Option

  • The primary specialization of IFoS is in Forests and Wild Life. DFO is Distt/divisional head and is equivalent of DC
  • SP in his area of responsibility. Every district has this trinity of DC
  • SP and DFO working in tandem. Also Many IFoS do go to deputations to Central Government as well. Many IFoS officers like Mr. Chaturvedi who was Chief Vigilance officer of AIIMS (who even won Magsaysay Award) have done great job. IFoS officers can serve in many ministries and PSUs. Job value of IFoS is among the best that a Government job in India can offer. Salary is equivalent to other two AIS services. 7th CPC has recommended absolute parity in pay among 3 AIS. Though IAS and IPS may seem more glamorous and in limelight all the time

Working Condition

The Indian Forest Service has inherent time-bound promotions and higher scales which are comparable to the best in government sector in the country. After completion of training, the IFoS officers are usually posted as Divisional Forest Officers (DFOs)/Deputy Conservators of Forests (DCF) with the independent charge of a forest division with a large number of Forest Guards, Block Officers, Range Officers and Assistant Conservators of Forests working under them. IFoS need to keep a check on illegal logging of trees and work with the forest guards and security personnel’s.

Educational Qualification

  • • Bachelor’s Degree in any of these subjects, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Zoology from a recognized University or equivalent. • Bachelor’s Degree or Engineering in Agriculture or Forestry from a recognized University or equivalent.
