An Indian Economic Services (IES) officer provides the economic perspective and advice to the different ministries in the policy making process. The officers also provide technical advice relating to economic reforms, regulation, price fixation, and monitoring and evaluation.
The role of an IES officer is significant as they play the role of an in house economists in every ministry of the Central Government and sometimes in State Governments. They also play a crucial role in assisting the Chief Economic Advisor of India in preparing the Economic Survey of India .
They also play a role in the planning commission and in providing an army of economists to give economic perspective.
1. The service is an inter-Ministerial and inter-Departmental service. 2. You would be required to work in departments dealing with economic and social sectors. 3. In the rapidly globalizing environment, decision-making is increasingly guided by economic rationality. 4. Besides cadre posts, you would go on deputation to serve in various domestic and international organizations such as UN bodies, foreign Governments, state Governments and regulatory bodies. Officers from the service are also appointed on deputation to posts in the Central Departments under the Central Staffing Scheme.
