Nandita Das is a well-known Indian actress and director. She was born on November 7, 1969 in Delhi to Jatin Das, a popular artist, and Varsha, a writer.
She began her acting career with the theatre group Jana Natya Manch. Das has acted in more than 40 feature films in around 10 different languages with renowned directors. She has been celebrated for her extra- ordinary performances in films like Fire, Earth, Bawandar, Kannathil Muthamittal, Azhagi, also a National Award winning Kamli in Telugu and Before The Rains. In 2008, she finished filming her directorial debut, Firaaq. The movie was "based on a thousand true stories". In 2005 and 2013, she became a part of the jury of the Cannes Film Festival. For her immense contribution towards arts, the French Government bestowed her with a very prestigious civil award i.e. the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. Das was the very first Indian woman to be inducted in the International Women's Forum's Hall of Fame, for her beautiful work in the field of arts. France also released a self-adhesive stamp as part of the project "Women of the world" for Nandita Das on March 10, 2009.
