Yash Chopra was a director and producer who reigned Hindi cinema during his time. He began his career as an assistant director and made his directorial debut in 1959 with the movie Dhool ke Phool. His initial films were a success at the box office. He rose to prominence with his commercially and critically successful drama, Waqt. In 1971, he founded his own production company, Yash Raj films. His success continued in 70's with movies such as Daag, Deewar, Kabhie Kabhie and Trishul.
His career suffered a setback for a while with movies such as Doosra Aadmi, Kaala Pathar, Silsila, Mashaal, Faasle and Vijay performing poorly at the box office. But, this era of violent films on Bollywood ended with his critically and commercially successful film Chandni that led the Bollywood to return back to the musicals. Chopra produced and directed Lamhe in 1991 which was considered to be his one of the best works till date. The movie was followed by Darr that was a huge box office hit.He then started a string of series with Shahrukh Khan (Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Veer-Zaara and Jab Tak Hai Jaan) and all of them were a huge hit at box office. Chopra's legacy continues with his production and distribution company, Yash Raj Films and Yash Raj Studios. He has been honored with Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award by the government.
