The Britain-based business philanthropist and tycoon, Lord Swaraj Paul, was born in 1931 in Jalandhar, Punjab. He studied at the Punjab University before joining the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), United States, to obtain his Masters degree.

Upon returning to India, he worked with the Apeejay Group, established by his dad. He went to London to treat his leukemia-suffering daughter. Unfortunately, she died. Highly grieved, he resorted to meditation.

In 1966, he permanently relocated to London. After the partition of his family’s business possessions, he renamed his company as Caparo. The company grew stronger and became one of UK's leading producers of spiral welded pipes and welded steel tubes. The Caparo Group, today, is one of the biggest family owned companies in Britain.

In 1978, Swaraj Paul, who became one of Britain’s richest persons was knighted by the Queen. In 1996, he was appointed as a life peer, a member of the House of Lords; and given the title Baron Paul of Marylebone in the City of Westminster.

He received many adulations and awards in India and abroad. He was nominated as the chairman of the Olympic Delivery Committee for the London Olympics in 2012.
