Why People Yawn Even If They Are Not Tired?

08 Sep 17

Is it true that yawning is transferable? With the help of a new study the scientists at the University of Nottingham have come up with an answer. As per the experts, the human propensity for contagious yawning is triggered automatically by primitive reflexes in the primary motor cortex. Primary motor cortex is an area of the brain accountable for motor function. The study by the scientists suggested that human ability to resist yawning during someone’s presence is limited. However, when a human tend to control yawn, the tendency to yawn does not change.

The scientists suggested that the urge to yawn or the tendency for contagious yawning varies from person to person. As suggested by the scientists, contagious yawning is triggered unwillingly when we observe another person yawn. Moreover, it is a common form of Echophenomena.

‘Echophenomena’ is commonly known as the automatic imitation of another's words (echolalia) or actions (echopraxia). According to the scientists, this new research can help them to understand the association between motor excitability and the occurrence of echophenomena and a wide range of clinical conditions.
