Stress and Boredom are the Main Culprits for Nail-Biting

22 Feb 17

The scientists have revealed that biting fingernails is a habit that often starts in childhood. After a study, the scientists found that 60% of children and 45% of teenagers bite their nails. This habit becomes less common after the age of 18, however, can continue into adulthood, said the experts.

The study shows that many adults and children are often unaware that they are biting their nails because doing so has become a habit. As per the scientists, stress and boredom are the main nail-biting culprits for most people. Many children find this habit an easy way to reduce anxiety.

The habit is often a way to keep at least one part of the body occupied while the mind lacks interest. According to other studies, frustration and loneliness are additional emotional triggers that can lead to nail biting. Some research suggests genes may play a role.

Along with the problem, the scientists have also explained about the physical and emotional consequences such as finger infection, bleeding as well as weakened teeth.
