Communication a Bridge between Children and Careers

As per a new study, parents who communicate with their children about the importance of science and math can build their career interest in the field.

Scientists conducted a study based on students interests and found 12 percentage point increase in math and science ACT for students. The scientists added that parents were provided with information on how to effectively convey the importance of science, technology, engineering and math during the study.

The research was done by Christopher S. Rozek, a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Chicago, and colleagues at Northwestern University. As per the scientists, this study has given a new insight to policymakers as the numbers of students are increasing in the field of STEM.

As per the lead author of the study Christopher S. Rozek, parents are potentially an untapped resource for helping to improve the STEM motivation. Additionally, parents can make their children prepare for the STEM career. Rozek also added that we can make a difference by encouraging parents to have conversations about the relevance of math and science.

The scientists were mainly aimed at expectancy-value theory, specifically, on the concept that individuals make choices on the relevance to a current or future goal.
