Sledge Hockey: The Popular Winter Sport

When we think about sports various games and activities came into our minds such as cricket, football basketball, hockey, so on and so forth. However, few of us may be aware of Sledge Hockey, also known as Para Ice Hockey. With time this sport has taken a special place in everyone’s heart.

Are you also thinking why Sledge hockey has become the sport that brings smile on our face? Let’s go back to the history to find out the reasons behind its popularity. Para ice hockey was invented in the early 1960s in Stockholm, Sweden, at a rehabilitation centre. Currently, it is one of the most popular sports in the Winter Paralympic Games. As per the history, two men from Sweden designed the sledge for Para ice hockey in the 1960s because of their love and affection towards the sports. They wanted to continue to play hockey despite their physical disability. Their unique design included two skate blades on a metal frame that allowed the puck to pass underneath.

The international governing body for the sports is known as The International Paralympic Committee. This committee officially changed the sport's name to "Para ice hockey” effective 30 November 2016.
