Suspension on Elephant Hunting Trophies
Editorials News | Nov-22-2017
President of US, Donald Trump held a suspension over the import of elephant hunting trophies. This happened only a day after a ban was relaxed by his administration. Trophies imports from elephants that were legally hunted in Zambia and Zimbabwe had set to resume.
The US President tweeted that the change was on pause until he could “review all conservation facts”. The initiative to relax the ban had sparked rage amongst animal activists. Huge level of protests against US President got spread on social media. It started with the sharing of images of President Trump’s sons posing with dead animals during their hunting trips in Africa. It has been argued that the hunting fees could aid in conservation of the endangered animals. This has been argued by US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).
It has been known that the African elephant’s populations are crashing. According to the 2016 Great Elephant Census, the numbers of elephants dropped by 30% from 2007-14.
