The Motherland of Football: Britain

Football is a team sport played between two teams, each consisting eleven players, with a spherical ball. It is the most popular game of the world that is played in almost 200 countries of the world. The history of football lies in the 19th century in Britain; however, it was not in the form as it is at present. It has gone through various modifications.

After a long span of time it gradually modified into the modern-day sports of association football, rugby football and as Gaelic football. The ancient football was very much disorganised, violent, spontaneous and usually played by any number of players. At that time there were no precise rules for playing football, therefore, a lot of violence was also done during the game. Even the football’s material and size was not defined. The first football was made out of a rock, occurred in old Mesoamerican cultures, is the first known examples of a team game involving a ball.

The ball symbolized the sun at that time and the captain of the losing team used to be sacrificed to the Gods as a punishment. There is also trace of football in ancient Greece where, the ball was made by shreds of leather filled with hair and also being Anglo-Saxon in origin. There are various controversial stories about its history but one thing is incontestable that football has flourished in the very region which is described as its home, Britain.
