The Thrill of Sapporo Snow Festival

The Sapporo Snow Festival is a much known festival of Japan that is held annually in Sapporo for over seven days in February. The main sites of the festival are Odori Park, Susukino and Tsudome. The 2017 dates of the festival are 6 to 12 February at the Odori site and 1 to 12 February at the Tsudome site.

The Sapporo Snow Festival is one of the largest and most distinctive winter events. About two million people in 2007 visited Sapporo to view hundreds of snow statues and ice sculptures at the Odori Park and Susukino sites in the central Sapporo and at the Satoland site. Since 1974, an International Snow Sculpture Contest has been held at the Odori Park and 14 teams from different regions of the world participated in 2008. The festival is always celebrated on a theme wherein the subject of the statues varies and often features an event, a famous building or a person from the last year.
