He started his career as a commercial artist and got his inspiration from French filmmaker Jean Renoir when he viewed Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist film Bicycle Thieves (1948) during a visit to London.

Mani Ratnam has created influential and revolutionary movies for which he has honored with Padma Shri, in 2002. The government has awarded him with Padma shri while acknowledging his contributions to film in 2002.
