Gerontology is the study of the aging process and the problems that elderly individuals might encounter. Professionals in this field typically study and find ways to treat physical, mental, emotional, and social problems.

This field of gerontology is very broad, and there are many sub fields. Social gerontology and bio-gerontology are two of the most common sub fields of gerontology. Social gerontology is the sub field of gerontology that deals with the social aspects of aging, and bio-gerontology is the sub field of gerontology that deals with the biological aspects of aging.

  • Gerontologists can often find employment in nearly any facility that treats or caters to older adults. They might work in hospitals and nursing homes

Gerontologists work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinical practices, counseling centers, hospice services, home health services, research universities and community and government agencies. Some also manage or serve as consultants to healthcare facilities or private companies geared to the needs of older people. They often travel to treat patients at home, assess living conditions and meet with caregivers and family members.
