Mathematics Researcher

The jobs in the field of mathematics research are hard to define in its purest form. It is too abstract to be considered a science. Thus, it has been described as a form of philosophy where it is a study which aims to explain aspects of the world through a high level of abstraction. Galileo also said that to understand universe, one must first understand its language, that language is geometry and numbers. Mathematics aimed at total abstraction and lead to crucial discoveries and has contributed to countless other fields of study.

Career Options

  • Today’s mathematical researchers have seen their work form a close relationship with the relatively young subject of computer science. It has thus become a field which is now tangibly shaping modern life. The very new interest has generated a boom and there are lots of exciting opportunities for those looking to go for a PhD
  • postdocs or faculty positions. The mathematical research occupation is small and there are relatively few mathematical researcher positions. Strong competition for jobs is thus expected. Many candidates with a background in advanced mathematical techniques and modeling will find good job opportunities in other closely related fields. People with a graduate degree in Mathematics
  • strong quantitative and data analysis skills and a background in a related discipline like business
  • computer science
  • statistics receives good job prospects.

Educational Qualifications

  • • Class 10+2

Personal Skills

  • - Analytical skills: Mathematical researchers must determine the appropriate software packages and understand computer programming languages to design and develop new techniques and models. They must also be precise and accurate in their analysis. - Communication skills: Mathematical researchers must interact with
  • and propose solutions to
  • people who may not have extensive knowledge of mathematics. - Math skills: Mathematical researchers use statistics
  • calculus
  • and linear algebra to develop their models and analyses. - Problem-solving skills: Mathematical researchers must devise new solutions to problems encountered by scientists or engineers.

Working Conditions

Most mathematical researchers work on full time basis. Deadlines and last-minute requests for data or analysis may require overtime in this field. In addition, mathematicians may have to travel to attend seminars and conferences.

Successful Persons

Homi J. Bhabha

He was born on 30th October, 1909 in Bombay. Homi Jehangir Bhabha played the pivotal role in the Quantum Theory. He was the very first person to become the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India. He started his career in nuclear physics from Great Britain, and then Bhabha returned to India and played a major role in convincing the Congress Party’s senior leaders, most notably Jawaharlal Nehru to start nuclear programme.

Srinivasa Ramanujan

He was born on 22nd December, 1887 in Tamil Nadu. He was an Indian mathematician and autodidact who without having any formal training in pure mathematics made valuable contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series and continued fractions.
