TERI and UNESCO Conduct Education for Sustainable Development Workshop

New Delhi, 23 February 2017: UNESCO in association with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) organized a two day Leadership Training Programme on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) for students, young ESD Leaders,practitioners, policy makers and youth entrepreneurs from Asia-Pacific Region in New Delhi on 15-16 February 2017. More than 50 youth in the age group of 18-35 years who are active leaders in sustainable development in their communities and regions attended the comprehensive capacity building leadership training workshop on ESD held at The Park, New Delhi. The objective of the programme was to empower youth leaders to inspire and mobilize others to take action towards building more sustainable,just and resilient communities in their vicinity and to build a youth-led ESD network for exchange and collaboration among the global communities.

The training was organized under the framework of UNESCO’s Global Action Programme(GAP) on ESD (http://en.unesco.org/gap), the official follow-up to the UN Decade on ESD (2005-2014). UNESCO has established Partner Networks focusing on the five Priority Action Areas of the GAP. TERI is a part of Key Partner Network 4,which focuses on mobilizing and empowering youth. Besides in New Delhi, the leadership training workshops on ESD will also be organized in four other parts of the world, including Dublin, Ireland; Beirut, Bahrain; Nairobi, Kenya; and San Jose, Costa Rica.

The workshop deliberated upon various themes such as Sustainability, Education for Sustainable Development, Systems Thinking, Conflict Transformation, Leadership,Visioning, Communication, Facilitation, Networking, Monitoring and Evaluation,etc. The participants are expected to share the knowledge gained on ESD to a larger segment of their community and also to promote the essence of GAP areas to a wider community.

Distinguished guests at the workshop included Mr Abel Caine, Senior Project Officer and Head of Youth and Communities, UNESCO MGIEP; Dr. Annapurna Vancheswaran, Senior Director TERI; Dr Prodipto Ghosh, Distinguished Fellow, TERI; Dr B C Sabata,Senior Scientific Officer, Department of Environment, Govt. of NCT, Delhi; Dr Sanghamitra Bhattacharya, National PMU for Swachh Bharat Mission; Dr Ram Boojh,National Programme Officer, Ecological Science, UNESCO, etc. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Annapurna Vancheswaran and Dr Ram Boojh.

‘We need to work towards including more quality e-learning opportunities for youth in ESD advocacy, implementation”,remarked Dr Boojh.

While addressing the role of youth in SDG action, Dr. Prodipto Ghosh said,“Besides the knowledge of 17 SDGs, it is of utmost importance that an individual’s daily activities should be inclusive of these goals in one or the other way. The youth should strategize their actions in such a way that it can lead to ultimate long-term solutions.”
