Advantages of Using TED-Ed in Classrooms

TED-Ed is a platform that is known to be a “lesson creator” which allows you to frame an assignment in a shape of a video and audit students’ participation with the material. The lesson format consisting of a title, an introduction (“Let’s Begin”), thereafter a series of open-ended questions  or multiple choice (“Think”), further exploration  by a place for additional resources to encourage a student (“Dig Deeper”), a class discussion for instructiveness (“Discuss”), and a closing (“And Finally”). The online platform enables you to effectively browse videos by typing in a subject area or entering a url of any type of YouTube video you have found.

Meanwhile, one can also use one of the TED-Ed Original versions and have students of your classroom join in public discussions or may modify the lessons as per the class objectives. A general caveat will be needed to have an exact related video, therefore this is a tool which one can easily adapt for the formative assessment, pre-assessment or summative assessment purpose by changing the varieties of questions that can be asked. There is a tool through which one can use it in the middle of a unit to access the progress toward the learning of objectives.  As well as one can use it at the end of any unit to question students so as to explain what they have actually learned in the context of video presented to them. Some reasons as to why TED-Ed is a handy tool:

  • It has Privacy:   It requires an email address or Facebook account and password in order to make an account.  If students wish to save their work (i.e., answers to the questions asked) they also need to have an account which will be password protected. It is an available option to change the account preferences so that discussion and comments one makes are displayed as “anonymous.”
  • Ease to use:  that makes it a very clean interface. New users receive tips for getting started and there is also a pop-up for feedback and comments. It includes a series of FAQ pages available.
  • Students learning: it seems to be contributing to both assessment and motivation.
  • Cost: It’s completely free of cost.
  • Access: It can be used on any device and it does not require any separate plug-ins. Tips for generating accessibility of YouTube videos are available but are not as evident on its website.
