Amazing Facts about Indian Republic Day

Republic Day is celebrated on January 26 every year. It honours the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January, 1950. Some of the interesting facts about republic day are:

(i) In the times before India gained independence, January 26 was celebrated as India’s Independence Day or Purna Swaraj Day. It later came to be celebrated as Republic Day in honour of the date on which the Constitution of India came into force, January 26, 1950.

(ii) On January 26, 1950, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was designated as the first President of independent India. Also, the Indian Air Force came into being.

(iii) The Republic Day celebrations last for three days. They come to an end on January 29 with a military ceremony.

(iv) The Indian Constitution that came into force on this day is the lengthiest in the world.

(v) Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, took 2 years and 11 months, in framing the constitution of India. It contains the best of aspects from the constitutions of other countries.

(vi) The first copy of our Constitution was hand written in English and Hindi.

(vii) Republic day celebrations began in 1995, when the first parade was held at Rajpath.

(viii) Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite song- Abide with me, is played at the Republic Day Parade.

(ix) 21 gun salutes are given when the President of India hoists the national flag on Republic Day.

(x) On this day, bravery awards are given by the President to deserving candidates.
