Lakes are not only good source of water but also add to the beauty of the particular place. The water quality of the lakes is degrading because of the activities people do in and around the lakes. Things like agriculture and climate changes are also responsible for lowering the water quality of lakes. Different lakes respond differently to these challenges as their environmental settings various from each other. It is not that much easy to access lake and geographic data that is required for such studies.
The datasets exist in multiple formats in government records, university text and private databases. LAGOS is the latest geography of lake water quality that is enabling researchers to understand the water policy and water management in a better way. LAGOS, that is also called Lake multi- scaled GeoSpatial and temporal database, includes information on 50,000 lakes in 17 U.S. North-eastern and upper Midwestern states. The team of LAGOS collected information for almost 50,000 lakes in 17 states with the help of digital maps, melding land use, and combined it with water quality data that they received from various sources.
It is clear that allowing the access to pure drinking water and the other services that lakes provide, like fishing and recreation, are among the immediate environmental challenges that we are facing. Recently created comprehensive database will provide information on water quality, and the physical and ecological factors that harms it.
