Our eyes remain so blocked for hours while holding a 7-inch object that we don’t even remember the last time we exchanged constructive and meaningful words with anybody. A man is becoming a social animal. He is so lost in the virtual world that he has no idea what is happening next to him. This is something that we experience every day of our lives, be it on the train, on the bus, in the public park, on the beach, in your own home and most worrying of all that we approach this as normality, we understand this as normal behavior.
If this is not addiction, then what is it? And we all know that addictions are not cheap. According to studies conducted by various institutions, digital addiction has been linked to higher levels of loneliness, envy, anxiety, depression and decreased social skills. Health professionals and experts carry out a "digital detoxification".
Digital addiction is something real and we have to recognize before something terrible happens. Earlier this week, a 24-year-old mother committed suicide in Tamil Nadu after she was prevented from using TikTok and a 16-year-old student from Madhya Pradesh suffered a major cardiac arrest and lost her life after playing PUBG for six hours straight last month.
Through the reports, Samir Parikh, Director of the Department of Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences, Fortis Healthcare, told that outdoor recreational activities and social commitments are a must. People should create a balance between work, life indoor, and life outdoor. It must also be ensured that they are sleeping correctly. It is essential that adults undergo four hours of "digital detoxification" every week.
Speaking to IANS, Sandeep Vohra, senior consultant, psychiatrist, hospitals of Indraprastha Apollo, New Delhi said that people who are addicted to the use of digital gadgets experience withdrawal symptoms in the form of always thinking about them, or irritate with disturbed people, and they sleep when they try to stop using their devices.
"Digital addiction is as bad as an addiction to any other drug, so if you are digital addiction, the signs are in reality”.
Adults can resort to detoxification to limit addiction, but what about the generation that looms and becomes prospective like this? To this Parikh says: "Parents should be good role models.
