International Forestry Day

We celebrate many days that are dedicated to our nature which is too precious to lose. When we are drinking a glass of water, while writing in a notebook, or even while taking medicine for fever or for building a house, we always tend to make a connection with forests. And yet, these and along with many other aspects of our lives are directly or indirectly linked to forests. Forests, their sustainable management resources and also its uses including the fragile ecosystems, are keys to combat the climatic changes, and for contributing to the prosperity and well-being of recent and futuristic generations. Forests also play a vital role in poverty alleviation and also in the achievements of the 17 unique Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Forests are known to cover one-third of the Earth's landmass while performing vital functions that are around the world. It has been noted that around 1.6 billion people – that include more than 2,000 indigenous cultures further depend on forests and depend on them for their livelihoods, fuel, medicines, food, and shelter.
Forests are one of the most biologically-diverse ecosystems that are found on land and are also home for more than 80% of the terrestrial species including all animals, plants and insects.
The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed today, 21 March as the International Day of Forests in the year 2012.
The organizers of this day are the United Nations Forum on Forests and also the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which are in collaboration with Governments, along with the Collaborative Partnership on Forests and other relevant organizations in the field.
This Day is celebrated with an aim to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests. On every International Day of Forests, several states and countries are boosted for undertaking local, national and international efforts for organizing activities that involve forests and trees, such as tree-planting campaigns. The theme for International Day of Forests is further chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests and in this year the theme is Forests and Biodiversity.
