Know Interesting Facts About Onam!

Onam is all set to come and will be celebrated from 1st September to 13th September, is the annual harvest festival which is mostly celebrated in the state of Kerala in India. Cultures of south are very rich and have many interesting facts associated with it. Onam has been known to have very ancient origins, and it is also regarded as the Festival of Rain Flowers. On this happy and auspicious occasion, there are also some interesting facts associated with it which make this festival a more special one.
One of the most beautiful facts that come associated with Onam is that it is a harvest festival and is not related to a particular religion. It is secular and is celebrated by all irrespective of their caste and religion.
The festival furthermore marks the homecoming of the great mythical King Mahabali, who is considered as King for Malyalees people. It is believed that the king comes here every year at this auspicious time to see whether his children’s and subjects are living happily. Onam comes among those few festivals that incorporate huge varieties of elements of culture like Vallam Kali, Pookkalam, Pulikkali, Thumbi Thullal, Onatthappan, Kazhchakkula, Onavillu, Athachamayam etc.
What can be better than owning its own dance form, the festival has its special, traditional dance which is known as Kaikotti kali or Thiruvathira kali. The festival also has a special and traditional dance known as Kaikotti kali or Thiruvathira kali.
There is this fascinating segment in this festival which is called Maveli Puja that is performed during Onam where three small sized figurines are made from red sand and then these are erected at the verandah and balconies of households. Similar to Ganesh Chaturthi, Onam is also a 10 day festival, where the first and the last are being considered the most important ones. Another most important thing about Onam are the onakkodi’s which are basically the new clothes worn on this day and also onam sadya, a delicious feast.
This feast is usually served on banana leaves with at least an array of 4 yum dishes. Along with this traditional pickles and papadam are served. ‘Payasam’, which is a popular desert is a must try at this time.
