Long-term consumption of sunflower and fish oil can damage liver and act as a catalyst for the inception of cancer as it increases non-alcoholic steatopatitics (NASH) concludes a study by the international group of scientists at the University of Granada (UGR), Spain. NASH causes inflammation of the liver which is not caused by alcohol abuse and acts as a catalyst to other liver diseases like cirrhosis and liver cancer.
The effect varies among different age groups like 1-3% on children, 5% on teenagers, 18% in the age group of 20-40, 39% on those in the age group of 40 and 50, and more than 40% on those above 70. Fat accumulation depends on oil consumption and some livers ages in healthier way than others, with a greater or lesser predisposition to certain diseases explained José Luis Quiles Morales, Full Professor of Physiology at the UGR. The study was carried on rats and it concluded that the consumption of these products damages liver. The study was also aligned with different kinds of oils as well and virgin olive oil was the only oil found to preserve liver throughout the life.
