The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction

What turns people into Science Fiction Fans? Firstly, the human mind is always curious to delve into the unknown. It intrigues the human mind to know and explore things that are at a distance and seem to be quite out of reach. Secondly Science Fiction explores ideas that few or almost none can do, especially if it is done really well. It transports one to an entirely different plane.

The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction is an English Language compilation of reference work on science fiction which was first published in the year 1979.The first edition was edited by Peter Nicholls along with John Clute and was published by Granada. The second edition was published in the year 1993 jointly edited by Peter Nicholls and John Clute.

The Encyclopedia of Science fiction contains entries under several categories like, authors, themes, films, filmmakers, television, magazines, comics, illustrators, book publishers, science fiction in various countries. The online edition of the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction was released in the month of October 2011. It had 12,230 entries. According to the latest update the entries now have reached 17,500 entries, and all are available online for free.

According to their blogs, the team has passed couple of milestones on the 1st of August, the Encyclopedia of Science fiction is now over 4.5 million words strong and John Clute's own contribution is more than 2 million words. The Gallery of book covers now boasts of over 10,000 images.

The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction is 35 this year and now in its third edition.
