Create a sustainable Future Through Education

Create a sustainable Future Through Education

Plastic has its role in modern society. It’s an essential part of our cars, computers, mobile phones, children’s toys – and practically everything we use on a day-to-day basis. But there’s one place where plastic has worn out its welcome – and that’s as a container for the food we eat and the water we drink. The bottom line is that plastic is made from toxic materials. It’s a known fact that these toxins can leach into whatever they come into contact with. And it’s a known fact that when the compounds that make up plastic are ingested, they damage your body on a cellular level and cause health problems.

Since schools are places where a lot of resources are consumed and a lot of waste is generated. They are also places where the next generation of leaders, thinkers, consumers and conservers work to acquire the skills necessary for success in the world of tomorrow to highlight the idea of Reuse. KPS is providing its students with an educative agenda that is broad enough to discuss and solve environmental issues. Our students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to deal with the social problems in an, authentic and meaningful way. We strive to teach our students about the alarming levels of plastic pollution, and most importantly, about how to prevent it by making a commitment to change. Expressing deep concern on its impact on one’s health the Green crusaders of Eco club class IX presented a scintillating Fashion Show under the able assistance of their teacher Ms. Anushka.

Each participant suggested Top Ways to Reduce Plastic Waste. They suggested to use break-proof glass water bottles as glass water bottle has a rubber coating that prevents breakage. It makes water taste amazing. They also emphasized upon dumping plastic Tupperware and instead go for stainless steel containers and lunchboxes. Try an alternative to non-stick cookware as the coating on non-stick cookware may be a type of plastic. Instead choose ceramic cookware or enameled cast iron cookware.  Give up gum. Gum is made of a synthetic rubber, aka plastic. Purchase food, like cereal, pasta, and rice from bulk bins and fill a reusable bag or container. You save money and unnecessary packaging. Reuse containers for storing leftovers or shopping in bulk. Use matches instead of disposable plastic lighters or invest in a refillable metal lighter. Avoid buying frozen foods because their packaging is mostly plastic. Even those that appear to be cardboard are coated in a thin layer of plastic. Plus you'll be eating fewer processed foods! Don't use plasticware at home and be sure to request restaurants do not pack them in your take-out box. Make fresh squeezed juice or eat fruit instead of buying juice in plastic bottles. It's healthier and better for the environment. Pack your lunch in reusable containers and bags. Also, opt for fresh fruits and veggies and bulk items instead of products that come in single serving cups.

PEACOCK-our National bird also appealed for PLASTIC FREE S KPS. Dressed up in a Peacock’s attire she danced on the tune of the mesmerizing flute to express her love and gratitude for our Principal Dr.Anju Mehrotra  on National Principal’s day celebrations  who herself  has been taking great initiative in  motivating the teachers and students  for PLASTIC FREE SCHOOL. Since becoming a waste wise school, KPS has embraced Plastic Free School.  At lunchtime students are encouraged to have a waste free stainless steel lunch box every day. The Eco club members senior surveyed the lunch boxes and took a tally of how each classroom is going. Some classrooms are up to 80% plastic free!   The winning class was announced in the morning assembly.  Certificates and trophies were awarded to the students and teachers for their untiring efforts to eradicate the usage of plastics forever from one’s life . Students were treated with a talk from Principal ma’am, teachers and student members with Plastic Free KPS. Students were keen to share their plastic free lunch box tips with everyone. Students have also started to recycle toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and packaging which is plastic that is pretty hard to avoid.

THE LAST PLASTIC STRAW was an important agenda during the Morning Assembly. The GREEN CRUSADERS VOICED OUT “Imagine something you use for barely 10 minutes, lying around on our planet for tens of thousands of years!  Keep this in mind the next time you sip your drink using a plastic straw,  simply remember “Plastic straws suck! they aren’t good for us or for our earth. Steel straws are a great alternative. In addition to it the common usage of   Plastic spoons to taste ice cream, plastic forks to eat chowmein on the street, plastic bowls for paani puri — just how much plastic cutlery we use on daily basis unknowingly. Are we guilty of using in a week; a month; a year?! The statistics can be staggering.  The students gave wise tips to avoid plastic utensils and carry their own cutlery around. It’s a small step but it can do the earth great wonders.

18th MAY 2018 being the last working day for the students and teachers before the commencement of summer vacation, The GREEN CRUSADERS of Eco-Club KPS conducted the last Morning Assembly and unanimously appealed   the entire KPS FAMILY with their campaigning of spreading messages of SAY NO TO PLASTICS in their neighborhood Moreover their agenda should be PLASTIC-FREE HOLIDAYS.  Passionately on the subject Students made pledges and some posters which were put around the school. It just goes to show that a little bit of effort from everyone can together make a difference! KPS is geared up to run Plastic Free activities after the summer vacation.

Plastic Free Schools is actually a program that aims to measurably reduce plastic pollution on school campuses, with a special focus on the reduction and ultimately the elimination of plastic bottles, plastic straws and utensils, and plastic food packaging. .KPS GREEN CRUSADERS enthusiastically took part in PLASTIC FREE MAY by organizing ample activities in respective classrooms and morning Assemblies   throughout the week with a serious aim of spreading awareness among each and every Kpite. Our students have learned about Plastic Free May and alternatives to single-use packaging for their lunches, morning teas and other items.. For example, now every day will be a waste free lunchbox day. Most children and staff have found creative ways to avoid foil, paper and especially plastic in their lunchboxes. Overall the school decreased its proportion of single-use wrappers by nearly 30%, with some classrooms reaching over 50%! A great achievement by the entire school, students thoroughly researched the issues and spoke.  They also did a lunch box audit and reduced the use of plastic in our lunch boxes by 50% over a week. Students are now aiming for a 100% reduction.  All we need to do is to come back to the simpler lives we once lived .Our school Principal once again applauded the students and teachers for attempting to transform their Plastic owned Life to PLASTIC FREE LIFE and simultaneously felicitated the sports teachers, Ms. Manju, Mr. Mukherjee and Mr.  Ashutosh with certificate of appreciation for supporting discipline during morning assemblies

The entire KPS FAMILY took PLEDGE promised that they will lead a PLASTIC FREE HEALTHY LIFE AND CURE THE MOTHER EARTH FROM BEING AILED.

The Green Crusaders of KPS Eco-Club Opine

The Green Crusaders of KPS Eco-Club Opine

Who had thought plastic would one day become such an unmanageable problem for the entire world? We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrowed it from our children. Let us retake our responsibility of protecting our earth. Abandon Plastic Avoid Pollution Achieve Green!! Plastic is problematic! Its use in almost everything has led to such humongous piles of indecomposable waste matter that it has created real hell of debris on land and in water. The water bodies and the aquatic flora and fauna have been affected the most.

A walk along any river, lake, and beach is sufficient to know the consequences of this ubiquitous ugliness floating. According to Ocean Crusaders, an organization dedicated to fighting plastic pollution 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. According to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, plastic debris kills an estimated 100,000 marine mammals annually, as well as millions of birds and fishes. Scientists in their recent research have found plastic to be much more toxic than previously expected. Plastic is making our environment highly toxic. The need of the hour is to replace plastic with environmental friendly materials.  In order to lead a healthy life, environment protection is something that is indispensable. Realizing well the damage that plastic bags cause to the environment, Green crusaders of ECO-CLUB of KALKA PUBLIC SCHOOL of us need to join our hands to fight this menace and preserve our beautiful environment. We must stop using plastic altogether. We can make ANTI-PLASTIC campaigns successful by saying ‘NO TO PLASTIC’. Let’s use environment friendly materials such as paper, jute, etc. and clear our planet of the evil of plastic.

KPS, Alaknanda, New Delhi organized a ‘No Plastic Drive’  to raise awareness on a Plastic free school and Delhi city as well.. To achieve this objective, a plethora of activities on the theme ‘Say No to Plastic’ were organized for the students of Classes VI-XII. Around 1000 students and all the teachers participated actively in various activities scheduled from 14 May-19 May2018. The school level campaign has been instrumental in instilling the moral values of conservation of energy and the greener and better world for the Future generation. The ban on polythene bags and plastic items is now spreading across the country with the government implementing its policies under the Swacthh Bharat Abhiyaan. However, plastic carry bags are still ubiquitous in the marketplace due to their dirt cheap prices and reluctance of shoppers in carrying reusable bags while shopping. Further, it is extremely difficult for authorities to locate polythene bags and seize them from retailers and hawkers. The search for the right alternatives is on at KPS. Being an active member of Green School Program, the school believes in making students responsible towards the environment and use only paper bags instead of plastic bags, and help in preventing pollution! To sensitize students about the significance of re-usable and eco friendly items like paper bags instead of plastic bags, a SPECIAL MORNING ASSEMBLY was organized  under the guidance of our  innovative teachers Ms Chetna and Ms Soni where the students of classes VIII and X spoke about the harmful effects of plastic  by presenting a DANCE DRILL. They showed us the alternative materials that can be used in place of plastic bags. They promoted Biodegradable bags. They also emphasized upon the fact that if we want to protect our mother Earth from the increasing pollution, then we must instantly SAY NO TO PLASTIC.

DR.ANJU MEHROTRA, the Principal of KPS applauded the scintillating performance of the students and equally acknowledged the untiring efforts of the teachers. She rendered a valuable message to the entire KPS family: Nature is given to man by God as a gift. Isn't it his duty to preserve thrift?   Plastics and Paper bags are given as a choice, one who chooses the latter is the wise. The students of classes VI &VII were given an activity based on SAY NO TO PLASTIC BAGS and replace them with paper bags. This activity was conducted under the supervision of Art and Craft teachers of KPS namely Mr. Dayanand, Ms. Sneha and Ms. Pragaya. The students from 6th and 7th grade made paper bags by using old newspaper rolls and distributed them in the vicinity of the school.

The paper bags were distributed to vendors and hawkers, explaining to them the ill effects of plastic. The students urged them to sell their commodities in paper bags instead of plastic bags. More than 100 paper bags were distributed among many others. Our students went from house to house and shop to shop speaking to people about the need to replace plastic bags with cloth bags and to help them make a beginning offered free cloth and newspaper bags. More than 300 students were part of this campaign. This campaign also aimed to encourage people to switch to the use of cloth bags from plastic, and to buy or make bags that they could use again and again, hence the name. This approach came from the understanding that unless the Use and Throw attitude was replaced by a Reuse attitude, we would continue to generate waste of all kinds. . The effort also witnessed students distributing paper bags. in the school canteen The campaign has successfully reached out to the citizens through the ardent efforts of school children, the future generation of the society.  The ‘world without plastic is fantastic’, ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ .The overall efforts of the students were well appreciated by the public. KPS recognizes students, the future generation of the country, as the best ambassadors of conservation of resource and preservation of the environment. The enthusiasm and dedication displayed by the students made it a unique initiative helping us reaching out to millions with the message of SAY NO TO PLASTICS.

We all are aware of how much our natural environment is getting cluttered and is already on the verge of losing its balance owing to the so-called modernization and development. The increasing use of resources and polluting agents have disturbed the natural form of the ecosystem, inflicting damage to the living organisms and the planet. The on-the-go lifestyle of people today is demanding more and more of disposable products, contributing a lot to the amount of garbage produced on daily basis. One of the primary culprits of this is plastic, which causes great harm to the environment and is the major contributor to the rising levels of land pollution. It is a fact that the upcoming generation is merely inheriting the mess unintentionally created by the previous generations. Hence, if the younger generation is shown the right means to deal with the environmental problems at an early age, they can certainly make a difference and turn it around. In that sense The ECO-CLUB of KPS organized POSTERMAKING ACTIVITY for class VIII to sensitize the students towards the need to protect the environment from plastic and to promote love for environment among them. Ms. Neeru Vasudev co-ordinated the entire event. The Poster making, which took place on 15th May actually engaged our students in showing the harm caused by plastic bags, and suggesting alternatives to such an extent that ultimately their messages on their posters voiced out: It’s High Time – Say NO to Plastics!!

This way, students not only got aware of the dangers of plastic usage but also got to know the solutions. At K.P.S we are taking all the necessary actions to minimize the use of plastic within the campus, so that we can contribute our bit towards building a better and healthier environment for the next generation. Overall, the Poster Making was very successful. The poster of each and every Kpite was amazing. The school Principal and teachers were dazzled by the talent and enthusiasm of the students and the multitude of ways they conveyed their ideas The students displayed these POSTERS in the entire school..Needless to say, these students are thrilled to know that the posters they labored so hard to create, will be catching everyone’s attention and reminding us to do the right thing. Using Paper bag helps us eliminate millions of plastic bags a year. Keep fighting for Earth.  A Special assembly was also organized by the students of classes VI and VII.

They presented a message giving Skit to showcase the impact of food packed in Plastic bags, Plastic tiffins and Plastic containers on our health after consuming it in our daily lives.Their voices were consistently resounding in the entire school premises.” From food storage to toiletries, carry bags to water bottles, we’re quite dependent on plastic. Brightly colored and patterned plastic lunch bags and boxes may appeal to kids, but they often contain high levels of lead and other toxins and can be nearly impossible to clean.” They further added that before we all continue the mindless use of plastic containers, let’s stop and think how the compounds in the seemingly harmless plastic containers can affect everyone’s health in the long run. Chemicals from the plastic containers can leach into the food or water that is stored in them.

Each and every voice was spreading the message of saving our planet and health by avoiding plastic containers and use better alternatives for storing foods and beverages. However, here are a few changes we could make to reduce the health risks associated with plastic exposure. Prefer carrying one’s own shopping cloth bag. Use glass bottles instead of plastic bottles. Most importantly prefer eating fresh healthy meals rather than junk food. Not to forget, A Stitch in time saves Nine. Ms Nadia and Mr. Debashish were the co-ordinators of this specifed event. The Principal applauded the endeavors of the green warriors of the school and encouraged them to work for the protection of the environment by doing every bit and be an active member of the green revolution.

29th Road Safety Week 2018

(23/04/2018-29/04/2018)

Event Observed at KPS to Raise Awareness on Abiding Traffic Rules

The Road Safety Week is an event held to raise awareness about road safety. The event encourages people to prevent casualties on road by taking necessary safety measures while driving. The theme for Road Safety Week 2018 is 'Sadak Suraksha – Jeevan Raksha'. “Our children are our future” and we must strive to keep them safe”. We at KPS are deeply committed to providing education for children to ensure that they are aware of best practice in road safety. Is fast, heavy traffic a problem around your school? How does that make the children feel? How can we tell drivers to keep their Speed Down?

The jubilant family of KALKA PUBLIC SCHOOL, ALAKNANDA joined hands with the Department of Traffic Police in observing the event. Keeping in mind the theme for this year's Road Safety Week, an array of activities related to road safety were conducted by the students of classes VI-XII during the whole week celebration of this campaign ranging from special morning assemblies to class activities. Propagating the importance of adhering to safety rules, the students showed road signs to everyone and urged all to become safety stars by following the traffic rules. The event organized to celebrate Road Safety Week. It was also marked by expert lectures. The school Principal Dr ANJU MEHROTRA also gave a thought provoking message on Road safety rules. An essay writing competition was organized for the students of class VIII. Students of class VI-VIII wrote meaningful slogans spreading information about the Honorable Supreme Court's verdict wherein it has been specified that "The effort to save the person should be the top priority not only of the medical professional but even of the police or any other citizen who happens to be connected with that matter or who happens to notice such an incident or a situation" and there is no legal impediment for a medical professional when he is called upon or requested to attend to an injured person needing his medical assistance immediately “The students designed colorful Posters , notifying the week and displaying the theme. The road safety posters and slogans were displayed inside and outside the school building emphasizing and accentuating drivers and commuters about the need of safe road travel by applying just simple rules Radio show by the students of class IX was an appropriate enriching and sensational activity wherein the Kpites voiced out their deep concern for road accident victims and invited different personas from various walks of life viz doctor, lawyer ,rage driver , policeman, commoner, patient etc to share their experiences with a healthy discussion about the methods and necessities of the road safety and to encourage all the travelers to follow the traffic rules and wear helmets and seat belts while driving . Role play by Grade 10 students emphasized on the issues related to road safety i.e. effects of violation of road safety rules, rules of road regulation-1989 and other Motor Vehicle regulations. To make the event more effective A Nukkad Natak titled Ek Awaaz was performed by the students of class XII with the aim on raising awareness and educating one and all about the rules of the road safety. The performance of the students left the students spell bound. Grade XI conducted a highly informative Quiz contest with informative and concrete questionnaire on the issues related to road safety with a special emphasis on decreasing and completely removing out the road accidents, road accident death and injury cases by applying the road safety measures. In addition to the above specified activities Interactive session with drivers of the school transport was also held by the senior students & School authorities, imparting training about road safety rules and first aid service in case of accidents. Trip To Astroport Sariska

Trip To Astroport Sariska

A school trip can be valuable in terms of imparting practical lessons to students, and that’s what we at KPS Delhi NCR are known for.  KALKA PUBLIC SCHOOL ALAKNANDA  organised  an Adventure and Astronomy based experience tour with an objective  to EXPLORE, EXPERIENCE, ENGAGE & EDUCATE the KPItes. On 12th March 2018, Monday morning at around 6.30 a.m, a group of 69 students from class XII accompanied by six teachers left from Delhi for an Educational tour to Astroport Sariska. Situated near the Aravalli Range in Alwar District of Rajasthan and being the second darkest place in India, this flagship tourist resort offers a glamorous view of the sky which is perfect for night sky observation.

The journey began with cheerful smiles followed by a sumptuous breakfast at Bikanerwala, Bhiwadi. We  reached Astroport around 1 p.m , after 6 hours of driving from South Delhi. We were welcomed in a traditional Rajasthani manner, with folk music, tika on the forehead and a glass of cool roohafza. It was time of March, but it was boiling hot by the time we reached. The students were divided into various groups and were taken straightaway to their tents which were furnished just like a deluxe suite  in a 5 star hotel with modern facilities. Everyone settled in, took a shower  and proceeded for lunch. Lunch was delicious. After lunch, everyone left for their tents again to take some rest. As soon as the sun was setting down students were taken on a round of the whole property. They have two organic gardens and everything from tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers to bottle gourds and brinjals was grown there. Evening was filled with trekking and stunning sunset views. And then began the magic of Astroport. As mentioned previously, this camp is built in one of the darkest spots in India and as soon as the sky darkens, one can see  millions of stars coming out one by one. And that is what Astroport is all about –Journey to STARS! The session started with an introduction to some basic astronomy and how to identify constellations in the sky. The galaxy of scintillating stars right above us left us astounded. Thanks to Delhi’s dreadful air, a clear sight of the night sky is alien to us, and it was hard to believe it was real (seemed more like a giant 3-D roof strategically placed just to impress us). As we marveled at the sheer brilliance of nature, there were cheeky remarks flying all over. While pin-pointing the constellations with his Star Wars-like super laser light, the innocent instructor told us tales of how the movement of stars helped our great ancestors to correctly estimate time, directions and the arrival of different seasons. He termed this the art of making out those early humans naturally possessed, thanks to their observational skills. “This was quickly followed by a presentation on DSLR camera and its features – something we had thought had the potential to bore us. Yet again, we were surprised. Not only did we gain new insight and discover features that were hitherto unheard of, but also got to try out those features and hone our skills at night photography (or astro-photography). We then made good use of a couple of powerful telescopes to get up close and personal with the likes of Orion and Andromeda, and gaze at the captivating spark of Sirius – the brightest star up there .The entire experience was great and made us feel like scientists from NASA exploring space.

That wasn’t all. The night had just begun. A great performance by a handful of Rajasthani folk artists at bonfire waited us post dinner From Kesariya Balam to Pallu Latke and Rashke Qamar, they played it all. It was the child dancer, though, that caught everyone’s attention, and even taught us a few steps. The bonfire at night helped to bring the spirit of camaraderie and friendship to the fore. This was followed by DJ and mesmerizing dance by one and all. A sumptuous dinner was served and everyone returned back to their tents for night sleep. On 13th March at 6a.m everyone was up and ready for the jungle safari .The resort booked the jeeps for us and we were off to see tigers in the wild. Sariska National Reserve is 5 km from the resort, a drive of about 20 mins in the jeep. Besides tiger, the reserve has many other wildlife species such as sambhar, nilgai, wild boar, spotted dear, leopard, striped hyena, langurs and others. But the one animal that dominated the reserve was the peacock. There are hundreds of them and you can spot them everywhere – atop poles, on trees, crossing the road! We spotted many of these peacocks as soon as we entered the reserve. But the first animal we spotted was a sambhar deer. He was majestic and it looked like he was posing for us . The thrill of going on a jeep safari deep into the  jungle cannot be put into words; the excitement and joy of driving through thick forest hoping to catch a glimpse of a monstrous cat darting for cover have somehow even escaped the photographs too. The keen eyes of the students however did manage to sight peacocks, monkeys, spotted deers, langur, wild fowls to mention a few. We came back from the safari at around 10a.m and had a  hearty, healthy breakfast and were about to leave  for Delhi but the  curious minds wanted to explore The Haunted Fort of Bhangarh . So  everyone packed up their luggage and proceeded for the place.  Located at the border of the Sariska Tiger Reserve in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, Bhangarh Fort is a 17th-century fort, infamous all over India for being the “Most haunted place in India. It is like other forts in Rajasthan, and is surprisingly well preserved. Its ramparts and fortifications stand amidst the ruins of the ghost town by the same name. Legends have it that the fort and the surrounding establishments around it once buzzed with life. Then something happened along with a chain of other unfortunate incidents which led to the doom of the place within a very short span of time. The entire landscape is subsumed by a pall of gloom and a chilling hollowness once the last ray of sunlight bids adieu until its arrival the next morning. One constantly feels as if their movements are being watched, and the air is charged with a dizzying heaviness. A board put up by the Archaeological Survey of India cautions the visitors not to venture within the premises of the fort during the dark hours. This fort gives us a glimpse of the remains of an ancient town. Indeed the fort is in ruins but it gives us the view of the Fort, its markets, gates etc.

It has been quite rightly said that the heart of education lies in education of the heart. And a child's heart not only seeks knowledge but also yearns for fun and frolic as well as learning through experience of new and exciting things, places and people. It is thus that our school provides its student’s a rejuvenating break from their hectic and at times monotonous routines through excursions the tour  was knowledgeable and made the students realize the importance of connecting one’s soul and spirit with nature. It was a fun filled trip away from school and home where students had the opportunity to learn in a totally different environment. They learnt to look after themselves and their belongings away from the supervision of their parents. They learnt to adjust themselves in the company of their colleagues and friends. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the trip, returned to the school with wonderful memories and a rejuvenated spirit .

Christmas Celebration

Christmas is not a time, nor a season but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, to spread the message of peace and goodwill, the teachers and students of Senior  Wing ,Kalka Public School, Alaknanda presented a beautiful assembly  on 23rd December 2017 with a festive spirit.
