A New Aspect to Use Cotton

Cotton is the staple crop of South Plains. New industry is going to use its incredible properties to save nature. A new study reveals that loose form of finer raw cotton helps in oil absorption. Environmental cleanup can be performed by using it. It’s a new method for oil spill remediation.

This study was done by The Institute of Environmental and Human Health at Texas Tech University and it got published in March/April 2017 issue of American Association Issue of Textile Chemists and Colorists Journal of Research. Oil spills have become an issue of concern as it has serious impact over environment and human health.  Oil sorbents which were used till date had a synthetic base and were threat to marine environment.  This study focused to create a biodegradable, natural and cost effective sorbent. They compared the absorbing properties of coarser and finer cotton in loose, needle punched nonwoven and hydro entangled non woven forms.

The properties of finer cotton in loose form proved to be the best sorbent material for oil absorbency. The researchers also added that they want to find industrial application and value added technical application for cotton.
