THE HISTORY OF BASKETBALL

The Basketball game was first invented in 1891 by James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor, in Springfield. He designed it to for conditioning young athletes during the cold months. The game was played with a soccer-style ball and peach baskets. For the game, Naismith published 13 rules. The aim of the game was to fling the ball into the baskets nailed to the lower railing of the gym balcony. Each time a score was made, they halted the game to retrieve the ball with the help of a ladder. After sometime, they removed the bottom of the fruit baskets.

As the 20th century progressed, the game became renowned in America and then all over the world. After the game entered American colleges, the professional basketball set it. On March 11, 1892, in Springfield, Massachusetts, the initial public basketball game was played.

In 1898, the first professional league was launched. After that several minor championships were founded. In 1909, the Eastern Basket Ball League; in 1921, the Metropolitan Basketball League; and in 1925, the American Basketball League were founded. In 1946, the American National Basketball Association was established, and the sport became American culture’s integral part.
