There have been so many eminent personalities in from Southern part of India. VijayalakshmiNavaneethakrishnan is one of them. She is a Tamil folk singer and composer and a renowned exponent of Tamil folk art.
She has conducted several years of research and study on Tamil folk music and dances together with her husband M. Navaneethakrishnan. She devoted her life to research, collection, revival, and documentation of ancient Tamil folk songs and dances, many of which are becoming obsolete.As a reward for her outstanding contribution the Government of India has announced to award her the prestigious “Padma Shri” the nation's fourth highest civilian award, for 2018. Being retired as professors in the Department of Folk Arts and Culture from the Madurai Kamaraj University, Mr. and Mrs. Navaneethakrishnan have continued their studies on folk art and culture. They have brought out several albums of authentic Tamil folk music and have recorded more than 10,000 audio cassettes of authentic folk music. At present they are working towards classifying their amazing collection to generate a Tamil folk music grammar and guide library. They are also planning to compile anencyclopaedia of Tamil folk music. Being very passionate to music they conduct performances that are sought after by connoisseurs and of Tamil folk music lovers globally. She really deserves this award.
