Educational Qualifications

  • Even aspiring students with arts can also apply to pursue a course in Anthropology. Generally, a science background at the +2 level is preferred for a B.Sc. program in Anthropology. B.Sc. in Anthropology is of three years duration and thereafter one can specialize in any of the branches at M.Sc and M.Phil levels. A candidate, who plans to join international development agencies as an advisor, should preferably have a Ph.D. degree in the subject.

Sarat Chandra Roy

Sarat Chandra Roy is popularly known as the father of Indian ethnography. S.C. Roy is the first Indian ethnographer and also regarded as the first Indian anthropologist. He said that Anthropology in India would play a crucial role in understanding the meaning and goals of human existence, the trend and aim of human culture and civilisation.

B.S. Guha

Biraja Sankar Guha was known to be a physical anthropologist. He worked in the classification of Indian population. This classification of Indian population was into races, Negritoes, Proto-australoids, Mongoloid, Mediterranean and Western- brachycephat. This was done by collecting anthropometric measurement of 2511 people from various parts of India.
