Texas Tech Basketball: Malik Ondigo Enters The Transfer Portal; Could Return

On Wednesday, news broke that striker Josh Mballa is ready to leave the Texas Tech basketball program after a season in Lubbock.

The most fascinating low season in the recent history of Texas Tech basketball took another turn on Wednesday, as it is reported that a third intern is leaving the program. According to Evan Daniels of 247Sports and FoxSports1, forward Josh Mballa will leave the Red Raiders after appearing in just 17 games during his true freshman season.

Mballa joins fellow 2018 Khavon Moore and Malik Ondigo, a second-year player, as players who have decided to seek other opportunities after seeing limited action during Tech's successful 2018-19 season.

In Moore's case, his recovery from a broken leg kept him out for more than half of the season until he appeared in the Jan. 16 game against Iowa State for just two minutes. But Beard and his staff did not feel that he was physically ready to contribute and they kept him out of action for the rest of the season, which did not sit well with Moore and his camp, which led to the departure of the player with the best position. to get in shape in tech.

As for Ondiago and Mballa, both seem to be so far from becoming collaborators that it seems better for the players and the program in which they move. Mballa averaged just 3.4 minutes per game in his appearances this season, accumulating just 0.8 points and 0.3 rebounds per game.

Native to France, the 6-foot-8, 205 pounds was considered a project with great physical tools but a limited set of basketball skills when he signed with the Red Raiders in the class of 2018. And that turned out to be true as it often seemed incredibly lost on the court, even against low-level competition. It was hard to imagine that his skills would develop enough to become a potential contributor to the Big 12, given the talent on the current list and the limited playing time that probably awaited him.

Product of Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut made offers only from Texas Tech and UMASS. Interestingly, it is one of three Putnam products that signed with the Red Raiders in the era of Chris Beard, who joined Ondigo and the 2019 signatory Russell Tchewa, a 3-star, 7-foot-1 center.

And although Mballa and Ondigo were, in general, excellent young men, their games are positive for the Red Raiders because it opens two scholarships so that Chris Beard can fill with players ready to contribute immediately. Technology has now stopped being a program that has to depend on players considered projects that can eventually add value to the field.
