CBSE to Penalise Schools for Enrolling More Than 40 Students Per Class

Education industry today has become a great source of earning money. More than focussing on the quality of education, they focus on making money. Although Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) keeps monitoring the schools that are running under its affiliation yet there are certain private sector schools that fail to comply with all the necessary requirements.

Recently through the board’s Online Affiliated School Information System (OASIS) it has been observed that various private schools affiliated through CBSE have registered more than 40 students per section. As per the CBSE norms, these schools are not allowed to register more than 40 students per section. More than approximately 1700 schools have been issued a show cause notice for the withdrawal of affiliation and a fine of Rs 500 or more per extra student. These schools make up for around 7-8% of the schools that are affiliated through CBSE. Education is one basic need and imparting education in the appropriate manner is extremely crucial. It is immensely important that each student in a class gains some attention of the teacher effectively. With the classes being too crowded with students these days the students often have to opt for private coaching which puts an extra pressure on the pocket of the parents also. According to statistics, in the year 2009-10, 43% of schools had more than 30 students enrolled in one class. This figure was nearly 25.7% in the year 2015-16. The five states with more than 30 students per class are UP, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat. This initiative mainly aims at cracking down against “renting of seats” in the private schools. It is often seen that students are enrolled in the schools for name sake only. In real, they go far private coaching and remain absent in school. The OASIS was another useful platform that was brought up in the year 2016 with an aim to bring together the entire information together on one digital platform. Various researches conducted over the teacher students interactions etc. have revealed that more interactions between teachers and students that happen in a class size of about 17-18 students per class increases the student test scores and long term benefits both. CBSE came to know about the violation of this rule when the data stored in OASIS matched with the number of students registered in class IX and XI standards. It was observed that the registrations exceeded the number of seats allowed per school. According to the statement given by one of the officials of MHRD, a number of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas have also violated the rule. Ideally, if a school is allowed to have 4 sections for one class, accordingly the school can enrol a maximum of 16o students. But the CBSE has permitted the government schools like the Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas to register 45 students per section. The basis of this permission is that the number of extra students in government schools is not large and also these students come from disadvantaged sections. Therefore this relaxation was granted to the government schools.
