The DMSP is basically based upon theoretical and empirical data and have to ability to describe the processes, pathways, and also outcomes that are associated with sport development throughout its childhood and adolescence. Cote, Lidor, and Hackfort (in 2009) have proposed seven postulates that are associated with the various types pathways of the DMSP.

More specifically, there are five postulates that focus on the influence of sampling and also deliberate play on youth's participation, performance, and also personal development in the sport and along with this two postulates were focused on important transitions. The whole purpose of knowing this was to systematically grade the quality of empirical evidences that supported each of these seven postulates, and provided recommendations for best practices for helping guide sport policy in each of these areas.
