Side Effects of Consuming Antidepressants.

Side effects of antidepressants can be unpleasant. At first, signs and symptoms like nausea, weight gain, or trouble sleeping may be common. After starting an antidepressant, these often improve within weeks for many people. However, there are instances in which antidepressants cause persistent side effects.

Tricyclic antidepressants disrupt the digestive tract and other organ systems, so they are frequently linked to constipation. Constipation can occur when taking other antidepressants as well.

Dizziness is more common with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and tricyclic antidepressants than with other antidepressants. Low blood pressure, which can cause dizziness, can be caused by these medications.

Sexual side effects are common with many antidepressants. Reduced sexual desire and difficulty achieving orgasm are two examples. Erectile dysfunction, a side effect of some antidepressants, can make it hard to get or keep an erection.

An electrocardiogram (ECG) may be required before or periodically throughout treatment, depending on your heart health and the type of antidepressant you are taking. To ensure that the QT interval does not become prolonged, the electrocardiogram (ECG) is utilized. A heart rhythm condition known as a prolonged QT interval can raise your risk of serious irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias).

If you are taking an MAOI or already have heart problems, you shouldn't take certain antidepressants. Discuss your heart health and any heart medications or other medications we take with your doctor.

According to some studies, certain antidepressants' efficacy and risk of side effects may be influenced by genetic variations. Therefore, whether or not an antidepressant works well for you and whether or not you are likely to experience certain side effects may be determined, at least in part, by your genes.
