Sports drinks, when are used by adult athletes, have the tendency of significant performance benefits. The carbohydrates can also supply the muscles with the fuel that is required during exercise. The main electrolyte from that is gained by sport drinks is sodium, which can result in improving the drive for drinking and can also assist with fluid replacement. One of the main aims of using such type of sport drinks is hydration, and without decreasing sodium level in order of preventing hyponatremia.

The addition of protein may also be beneficial for preventing the muscle damage and may also improve or maintain the subsequent performance over the consecutive days. Other active ingredients (as vitamins)can also play a significant role in energy metabolism or in the free radical defense, but these are usually found in little amounts and it is unclear if they possess any direct performance benefits. Caffeine further improves reaction time and if regularly consumed few hours before anaerobic/resistance exercise can improve the performance, while having no effect on repeated high-intensity training.
