The principal belligerents who were part of this war were the Axis powers that comprised of Germany, Italy, and Japan—and the Allies were France, United States, Great Britain, Soviet Union and to some lesser extent China. The war was a result of the unsettled disputes in World War I. The 40,000,000–50,000,000 deaths which incurred in World War II made it the bloodiest conflict, and also remarked it as the largest war in the history.
Along with World War I, World War II was one of the great watersheds that occurred in 20th-century geopolitical history. This war resulted in the extension of the Soviet Union’s power to the nations of eastern Europe. It also enabled a communist movement so that they can eventually achieve power in China. This marked the decisive shift of immense power in the world taking it away from the states of western Europe and towards the Soviet Union and the United States. By the starting of early part of 1939 the German dictator Adolf Hitler became determined to invade and occupy the country of Poland.
Poland had guarantees of French and British military support that it should be attacked by the country of Germany. While the secret protocol of the pact, reported that the Germans and the Soviets both agreed that Poland should be divided between them or not, and also with the western third of the country going to Germany and the eastern two-thirds being taken over by the U.S.S.R.

It is reported that a humongous number of about 70 million total soldiers fought in the war on behalf of the Allied and Axis countries. There were certain countries which declared themselves as neutral in this war, they were- Switzerland, Spain, Portugal and Sweden.
The war started when Hitler ordered hostilities against Poland, and in response France and Great Britain also declared the war.
Another amazing fact states that some scholars still argue and are in dilemma that the start of WWII was in 1937 at the time when Japan invaded China and instead of when Poland was invaded by Germany.
