INDIA Bloc Triumphs in Jharkhand Elections

The Jharkhand Assembly Elections of 2024 saw a decisive victory for the INDIA alliance, led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). Contesting 41 out of the 81 assembly seats, the JMM aligned with Congress, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies. Voting occurred over two phases on November 13 and November 20, with a strong voter turnout of 67.74%, particularly noteworthy for the higher participation of women.

The JMM-led INDIA alliance secured 56 seats, clearing the way to form the government. Within the coalition, the JMM won 34 seats, Congress secured 16, RJD took 4, and CPI-ML clinched 2 seats. The BJP, which contested 68 seats, managed to win only 21 seats, while its allies – All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Janata Dal (United), and Janata Loktantrik Morcha – won one seat each. Chief Minister Soren emerged victorious from the Barhait constituency, further bolstering the alliance’s strength.

The results underscore a significant shift in Jharkhand’s political landscape, emphasizing the INDIA alliance's strong foothold in the region and signaling broader voter support. This triumph is a substantial boost for Hemant Soren and his coalition ahead of the 2024 general elections, positioning the alliance as a formidable force against the BJP in Jharkhand.
