Brief Of Sarojini Naidu: The Nightingale Of India

Sarojini Naidu was a freedom fighter, feminist, political activist and a poet who was born in British India in 1879. She was also the first female state governor. She is also known as 'The Nightingale of India' because her poems are rich in imagery and emotions. At the age of 16, she received scholarship from Nizam of Hyderabad to study at King's College, London and then at Cambridge. Sarojini Naidu was one of the first Indian woman to become the president of the INC.
She was married to Dr Govindarajulu Naidu at the age of 19 and lead a happy married life with 4 children Padmaj, Randhir, Leilaman and Jayasurya. Naidu first became interested in the Indian national movement after the wake of partition of Bengal in 1905. She further came into contact with Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Jawaharlal Nehru, Muhammad Ali Jinnah and other national leaders at the time. She was also jailed during the Civil Disobedience Movement and the Quit India movement along with Gandhi and other leaders. She had quite a pleasant relationship with Gandhi often referring to him as Mickey Mouse. She became the first woman governor of independent India. She passed away on March 2 of 1949 due to cardiac arrest while working in her office. Some of the well-known poems written by her include Palanquin Bearers, Autumn Song, Indian Weavers, Coromandel Fishers, Autumn Song and In Salutation to the Eternal Peace.
