Chandrayaan-2 Mission: 95% Achieved!
Editorials News | Sep-16-2019
A recent big happening which occurred in India and which proved how much patriotic and united we are. It was 2 p.m. when every Indian stick to his/her television for witnessing India’s very first attempt to land a spacecraft on Moon. The attempt which has not been completely successful has known to be 95 per cent accomplished. The lander of Chandrayaan-2, named as Vikram, was expected to slow down at some estimated rate but towards the latter part of its descent it most likely hit the lunar surface with an intensity and speed greater than it was required for the safe landing. We were just 2.1 km away from the moon when the ground control station lost its contact with the lander.
So, not the big question which aroused in minds of every Indian that has Chandrayaan-2 mission failed?
The worthy and correct answer to this is no, no the mission has not failed, although the thought and attempt to land the lander spacecraft on the Moon surface has certainly not completed but the thought for which the mission was launched is somewhere achieved. The mission comprised of an orbiter, a lander and a rover. The orbiter part of it is still functioning normally. Most of these scientific investigations of such missions are supposed to be carried by instruments like on board the orbiter and it also includes studies which find for more and more evidences of water presence on the Moon. Scientists have insisted that 80-90 per cent of the overall science output of the mission have to come because of the orbiter, which has not been affected at all.
It is also possible that some of the parts and instruments on the lander are working and are functional and also that two-way communication can be re-established with the help of them through the ground station. If considered the best-case scenario, it can be thought that these instruments start performing the functions they were intended to.
However, what happens next is yet to be known.
