Changes Introduced by CBSE For Classes 10 and 12

Board exams are indeed a very big event in a student’s life. Not just students, but parents and teachers are also extremely stressed during these exams. The Board exams for the current academic session i.e. 2018-19 are just round the corner. They are to begin from mid of February this year. To keep up with the changing needs of the society and to cater to the educational needs of students, CBSE keeps introducing various changes in the pattern of the board exams for classes 10th and 12th.  The various changes in the pattern of board exams that have been introduced by the CBSE are as follows:

1. Early conduct of exams and resultantly declaration of results

Usually the board exams used to commence from the month of March but this year onwards the board exams for classes 10th and 12th shall begin in the middle of the month of February only. The exams for the vocational subjects are scheduled in the month of February and for the core subjects in the month of March. This change has been introduced by CBSE in order to complete the entire process of board exams well in time. This will also enable CBSE to declare the results by the last week of April or early May.

2. More internal choices for class 10 and 12 students

The format of the question papers have been revised by CBSE for the upcoming board examinations with respect to the internal choice that is provided to the students. If we refer to the sample papers that have been released by CBSE, we will notice that the internal choices in the questions have been increased by almost 33%. This change has been uniformly brought about in each subject.

3. Major changes in Class 12 english paper

Earlier section A of the English paper used to have 3 passages. Now onwards there shall be only 2 passages. The first passage shall consist of 5 MCQs, 9 very-short-answer-type questions, and 3 short-answer-type questions, on the other hand, the second passage shall consist of two long answer type questions. In total Section A will now consist of only 19 questions. This has reduced the total no. of questions in the question paper to 35 from 40.

4. Python language introduced for class 12 students

From the year 2019, CBSE shall introduce Python language for class 12 computer science examination. The students will be able to choose between C++ and python language.

5. Question paper format may see a change from the year 2020

CBSE is planning to bring about a change in the question papers of class 10 and 12 board exams from the year 2020 in order to test the analytical abilities of students and at the same time reducing the scope of rote learning. The paper shall lay more focus on problem solving and critical thinking abilities type questions. The paper shall test the actual learning outcomes and shall consist of more short answer type questions of 1-5 marks.
