Cricket, Supreme Court and Lodha Committee
Editorials News | Jul-11-2018
Cricket in India is like a religion which has its place in hearts all Indians. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) which administers the game in the nation has always been mired in one controversy after another with large political interference, corruption, match fixing, betting etc.
Especially after the introduction of IPL, match fixing and corruption has become more common news in the cricket of India. This went to such an extent that Supreme Court had to interfere in this matter and appoint Lodha committee to give a report and a final verdict for IPL scandal and recommendations for reforms in BCCI.
At present 30 states of India are full time members of the BCCI. However, six of the Northeastern states, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and UttaraKhand are not yet represented on BCCI. There are certain states like Gujarat and Maharashtra have over representations with 3 full members representing parts of their states. At this time BCCI is registered as a society under the Tamil Nadu Society registration Act while several other states have their registration done either under some companies or under Societies registration Act.
According to the Lodha Committee recommendation it has been suggested that each state will have only one unit and would be able to exercise only one vote. There should be uniformity in constitution and functioning of the BCCI and its associate members.
Keeping several other Lodha Committee recommendations in view the Supreme Court on the 5th of July, Thursday restrained all the state cricket bodies from holding any kind of elections till the Supreme Court pronounced the final verdict on the draft constitution of the BCCI.
