Decoding the Date of Oldest Recorded Solar Eclipse

A solar eclipse is a kind of eclipse that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth. During solar eclipse the Moon fully or partially blocks the Sun just for a time being. It happens only at new moon when the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth in an alignment called syzygy. The oldest solar eclipse that was not recorded has been marked by scientists.

There is a reference of solar eclipse in the holy Bible dated October 30, 1207 BC. It has created a chronology regarding that. There have been mythological instances associated with solar eclipse. The scholars have been trying to get the meaning of the text and come up with the meaning that “text to mean that the sun and moon stopped moving.” However, some scholars say that there can be other meaning of the text like “sun and moon just stopped doing what they normally do: they stopped shining” it might not be the eclipse exactly.

Earlier historians claimed that it was not possible to investigate this possibility with calculation. Now the researchers developed a new eclipse code, which takes into account variations in the Earth's rotation over time. With these calculations, scientists speculated that the only solar eclipse that was first visible from Canaan was on October 30, 1207 BC.
