DHONI’S MATCH-WINNING SIX: AN ETERNAL SHOT
Editorials News | Feb-01-2017
Mahendra Singh Dhoni is standing down as the captain of India ODI (One Day International) and T20I teams.
Of all the things that he will be remembered for, his match-winning six in the 2011 ICC World Cup final will be the most immortal memory of those cricket fans whose idol he has been for many years now.
On April 2, 2011, Dhoni sent a huge six into the sky, throwing his fans gathered at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, into raptures; and winning the World Cup for our country.
Shortly after this, he and Yuvaraj Singh gave their press briefings, which was one of the most memorable ones ever by Dhoni and Yuvaraj.
The match began well for Sri Lanka, with Mahela Jayawardene’s fine hundred. It seemed like India was on the downtrend, with Sachin Tendulkar scoring only 18 and Virender Sehwag going for a duck.
But Gautam Gambhir saved the day for the hosts by scoring 97. His third-wicket partnership with Virat Kohli was good.
Then entered Dhoni and dragged the opponent bowlers around to score 91 not out off 79 balls. Along with Yuvraj, he carried the Indian team to a six-wicket victory.
