DRAWING CANADA- A GOLDEN CHANCE FOR INDIA
Editorials News | Apr-25-2017
Anand Amritraj, the former Davis Cup captain, believes that drawing Canada in the play-offs offers India with a golden opportunity to enter the World Group in the forthcoming year’s tournament.
In the Asia-Ocenia zonal match held recently in Bangalore, the Indian team won over Uzbekistan, and was drawn to face Canada for a place in the 2018 Davis Cup’s elite group.
Amritraj who spoke in Chennai at the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association’s annual day function, stated that Canada was the right option to draw from among the 8 teams who had lost in this year’s competition’s initial round. He said “This is our golden chance. If we are going to get into the World Group, this is the year we have to do it.”
He added that if Canada did not own Milos Raonic, its top player, our team had a good chance of winning, the best in the past four years.
The Canadian crusher recently resigned from the Miami Open after a right hamstring injury which left him sidelined for about a month. Earlier, due to an adductor injury, he had pulled out from Canada’s Davis Cup World Group tie against Britain.
