Editorials News | Mar-07-2018
Veteran Indian Tennis player Leander Paes had to come to terms with finishing at runners-up at the Dubai Tennis Championship while playing men's doubles alongside Jamie Cerretani. The crucial 300 points is most likely to help him advance in the rankings just ahead of the Davis Cup selection cup. The 44-year old Tennis player was playing his first ATP World Tour final after more than 3 years. His performance earned him a total of 300 ranking points. Paes who was playing his 97th ATP World Tour event and America's Jamie Cerretani lost to Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands and Horia Tecau of Romania 2-6 6-7 (2-7) in 1 hour and 27 minutes.
Paes is ranked on number 52 now with a total of 1525 points. Divij Sharan is currently on world no. 45 and has a total of 1715 points. Sharan is India's No. 2 player just behind Rohan Bopanna who is ranked world number 20th. We are eager to see whether or not Leander will surpass the left-handed Sharan who is considered to be one of the most consistent players of India in 2017.
The Davis Cup Selection Committee also considers the rankings apart from the performance when they pick the squad to play. Leander has been kept out of the Davis cup selection for quite a while now. Indian team is all set to play with China as an away second round tie in the Asia/Oceania group. The match will be held in April first week.
