Editorials News | Feb-28-2019
Sven-Goran Eriksson, Former England, and Manchester City manager is interested in becoming the next India football coach. It has been revealed that the 71-year-old Swede, through his agents, has let the All India Football Federation (AIFF) know about his availability for the post left vacant since Englishman Stephen Constantine quit after the AFC Asian Cup campaign.
As Philippines manager, Eriksson has recently ended his short tenure after his team completed winless in the continental showpiece which took place in the United Arab Emirates.
An AIFF source said that Eriksson has not contacted the AIFF directly/. He let the AIFF know, with the help of his agents, that he's quite interested in the job especially as India is an emerging footballing nation. Sources also say that the AIFF has been getting a lot of resumes from a number of coaches across the world. They, however, are in no hurry for choosing anyone immediately. They want to take their time and should make a final decision by mid-April.
The sources also added that the impressive performances of India of late have grabbed quite a few eyeballs. Their encouraging and excellent performance in the Asian Cup, especially their 4-1 victory over Thailand has shown that they are able to perform well at the world stage. People now understand that India is serious about their football with quality foreigners coming to play in the Indian Super League (ISL). As soon as Constantine stepped down, the number of CVs has come flooding in.
Eriksson began his managerial career back in 1977. He has coached the Mexico national team as well the Ivory Coast team. Also, he has worked with clubs in ten countries. The most famous stint of his tenure, however, was with the England national team from 2001-2006 where he provides guidance to the quarterfinal of the 2002 and 2006 World Cups in which they lost to Brazil and Portugal respectively. England under him also lost in the 2004 Euro quarters to Portugal.
Eriksson was all praise for the performance of India at the Asian Cup, saying football needs countries like India. While speaking after India's win over Thailand, he told reporters that India dominated the game and scored four goals. This is amazing and the whole world who saw that match felt that they are physically and technically good players.
