Tennis is the game, which is loved by all, in the whole world but do you know from where it originated and what is its complete history, if no read below as here are some interesting and informative facts about tennis history. The game which most people call 'Tennis' is actually the direct descendant of what is now regarded as real tennis or royal tennis. Most rules of this game that is commonly known as tennis derive from it. It is reasonable and different to see both sports as variations of the similar game. Most historians believe in the fact that the game of tennis originated in the 12th century at the monastic cloisters in northern France. At that time, it is said that when the ball was struck with the palm of the hand, tennis was given a name jeu de paume which means "game of the palm".
It was not until the 16th century that tennis rackets came into use, and the game finally began to be regarded as "tennis." Tennis was earlier very popular in England and France, and a great king Henry VIII of England was a big fan of this game which is now referred to as real tennis.
Due to the terror which accompanied during French revolution many of the French courts were decommissioned. The oath at the tennis court (Serment du Jeu de Paume) was one of the most pivotal events during the starting days of the French Revolution. The Oath was basically a pledge which was signed by 576 of the 577 members from the Third Estate.
Another very famous competition called as the Davis cup which is an annual competition played in between men's national teams, dates to around 1900. It was in 1953 when the analogous competition for women's national teams regarded as the Fed Cup was founded as the Federation Cup. It was done to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation which was found on that day and is also known as ITF.
In 1968, an incident changed the whole criteria of the game when rumors of some amateurs taking money under the table floated among people. This led to the abandonment of this distinction and inaugurated the Open Era. With the beginning of this open era, tennis's popularity spread worldwide.
