Motorsport is a popular form of sport in the nation of India. Formula One in particular has taken off in the country in the 2000s, with two competing Indian pilots (Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok) and the first Formula One Indian Grand Prix took place in 2011, at the newly built International Circuit of Buddh. Formula One (also Formula 1 or Formula 1) is the highest class of car racing authorized by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and owned by the Formula One Group. The FIA Formula One World Championship has been a of the most important forms of racing worldwide since its inaugural season in 1950. The word "formula" in the name refers to the set of rules that all participants' cars must comply with. A Formula One season consists of a series of races, known as Grand Prix (in French, "grand prizes" or "grand prizes"), which take place around the world in specially designed circuits and on public roads.
The results of each race are evaluated using a point system to determine two annual World Championships: one for pilots and one for constructors. Drivers must have valid Super Licenses, the highest class of racing licenses issued by the FIA. The races must run on tracks rated "1" (formerly "A"), the highest rating issued by the FIA. Most events occur in rural places on specially designed tracks, but several events take place on the streets of the city.
India, as a country, had its own Formula One team known as Force India Formula One Team Limited, founded and managed by a wealthy Indian businessman Vijay Mallya. The team was based in Silverstone, United Kingdom and competed in Formula One for ten consecutive seasons from 2008-2018, achieving very little success on some occasions and the team's highest position in the Formula One Builders Championship was the fourth in the 2016 season. The Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India is the official governing body of motor sports in the country. India also competes in Moto GP, Moto 3 class with Mahindra Racing. Mahindra is based in Switzerland but has an Indian license.
On February 1, 2005, Narain Karthikeyan became the first Formula One driver in India. In March 2007, he also became the first driver born in India to compete in a NASCAR Series. He debuted in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on the Kroger 250. Force India F1 is a Formula One racing team. The team was formed in October 2007, when a consortium led by Indian entrepreneurs Vijay Mallya and Michiel Mol bought the Spyker F1 team for € 88 million. After going through 29 races without a point, Force India won its first place in the Formula 1 World Championship and a place on the podium when Giancarlo Fisichella finished second in the Belgian Grand Prix in 2009. New Delhi received the Grand Prix of India in 2011 at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, 50 km from New Delhi. In the 2011 Formula One season, Karun Chandhok was the test driver for Team Lotus and Narain Karthikeyan was the test driver for HRT. Both Chandhok and Karthikeyan intervened (for Jarno Trulli and Daniel Ricciardo, respectively) in the 2011 Indian Grand Prix; It was the first time that two Indian pilots compete in the same Formula One Grand Prix.
In December 2013, Mahindra Racing joined the FIA Formula E Championship. For the first season in 2014–15, Karun Chandhok drives alongside Bruno Senna. Mahindra finishes eighth of the Team Championship. The Indian driver leaves the team after the first season and is replaced by Nick Heidfeld.
