Former CEC N. Gopalaswami to Select India's Top 20 World Class Institutes

N. Gopalaswami, former Chief Election Commissioner and the head of Vivekananda Educational Society, which is affiliated to RSS's educational wing Vidya Bharti or Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Sansthan is about to select the top 20 World Class Institutes of India. He is going to head the empowered expert committee that will be doing this job. The constitution of the EEC was approved as per the UGC regulations of 2017 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Other members of this team besides Gopalaswami being the chairperson include Tarun Khanna of Harvard Business School, former director of MDI Gurugram and IIM Lucknow and Houston University Chancellor Dr. Renu Khator and Dr. Pritam Singh are among the others holding upper positions on the panel. The Narendra Modi government has also given Gopalaswami an opportunity to be the chief of a 13-member panel in 2015 that was made to suggest ways of the Sanskrit promotion. HRD ministry has invited some institutions last year to apply in order to get upgraded into the "world-class universities". They received a total of 100 applications including from a total of 7 IIT's, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Jadavpur University, Mangalore University and Goa University. The commission will scrutinize their proposals and review the implementation plans that needs to be taken. It would further rank the institutions in order of suitability into the scheme. The HRD ministry will make the final call in the end.
