Ganga: The Holy is Now More Polluted
Editorials News | Dec-23-2019
Our river ganga is famous for its holy values which it carries with itself but we all are also aware that not only its holy factors but also its pollution and the worsening state of our most pure river is a hot topic now a days. Pollution of the Ganges (or Ganga) which is the largest river in our country, poses vital threats towards human health and more largely to the environment. Severely polluted with our human waste and also industrial contaminants, the river is the source of water to about 40% of India's population ranging across 11 states that serves an estimated population of more than 500 million people, which is a large no. to be serving any place.
Ganga which was once the sign of purity is now considered to be among the sixth-most polluted rivers in whole world. Raghubir Singh who is an Indian photographer, has recently noted that no one in our country spoke of the Ganges as it’s polluted until the coming of late 1970s. However, pollution has been always an old and continuous procedure when it comes to rivers.
There have been number of initiatives which are undertaken for clean the river but we failed to deliver every time to get desired results. Subsequently, the Ganga cleaning project: Namami Gange was also announced by our government in the budget of July 2014.
The major causes of water pollution in the Ganges River are many. From the increase in the population density to various human activities and also dumping of several harmful and hazardous industrial wastes into the river, all are responsible.
